California sets limits on formaldehyde emissions
California's new regulation for drastically reducing formaldehyde emissions from composite wood products took effect on January 1, 2009.
The regulation would affect all composite wood products being sold, imported, used or produced in California.
Were concerned:
- Manufacturers, distributors and/or importers of plywood and particle boards.
- Manufacturers using plywood and particle boards.
- Retailers of goods made of plywood or particle boards.
However, on March 16, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) said on its website (FAQs section), that its intention were not to impose an additional constraint on trade by willing the wood packaging industry to adopt this regulation.
The state of California has thus excluded wood packaging form the scope of the regulation. The term "wood packaging" includes pallets, crates, stakes and containers used for handling, sorting, storing and transporting goods.
